Cornell Law hosts ‘death with dignity’ panel discussion and film screening

ITHACA, N.Y. – Cornell Law School is hosting a panel discussion on the effort in New York state to legalize physician-assisted suicide. Panelists will discuss their views on the proposed “Death with Dignity” legislation. Refreshments will be served from 6 to 6:30 p.m., followed by the discussion.

After the discussion, there will be a screening of “How to Die in Oregon”, a Sundance Film Festival Grand Jury Award winning documentary which tells the story of terminally ill Oregonians as they consider if and when to end their lives by lethal overdose. Aiding a person’s suicide attempt is currently a class E felony in New York. The movie starts at 7:15 p.m. Closing remarks and questions will be taken after the film screening ends.

Panelists include:
Dennis Vacco, Esq., former New York State Attorney General, in case of Vacco v. Quill Dennis successfully argued that Physician Assisted Suicide was not a constitutionally protected right.

Timothy E. Quill, M.D., Professor of Medicine, Psychiatry, and Medical Humanities at the University of Rochester School of Medicine and Dentistry and Director of the Center for Ethics, Humanities and Palliative Care.

Professor Daryl Bem, Emeritus Professor of Psychology at Cornell University and husband of the late Sandra Bem (read Sandra Bem’s story here).

Father Daniel T. McMullin, Sacramental Minister, Associate Director of CURW at Cornell University.

Cynthia Grant Bowman, Dorothea S. Clarke Professor of Law at Cornell Law School.
